Angelo Maione has been in the restaurant business nearly all his life. In 1971, he arrived in New York from Calabria, Italy. His first job was making bread at a Mulberry Street bakery. To occupy his afternoons, Angelo worked at a pizzeria in Brooklyn. He took to the art of spinning dough and soon had visions of owning his own pizzeria.
Just a few years later Angelo found himself at Emmy’s Pizza in downtown Bridgeport. He was there to help his brother-in-law while his partner was on vacation. Angelo never left.
Instead, he eventually bought Emmy’s Pizza and later moved it to Main Street renaming it Emmilio’s. However, Angelo wanted to offer his customers more than pizza, subs, and pasta.
In 1998, he opened Maione’s on Stratfield Road at the Bridgeport – Fairfield line. Maione’s offers customer’s traditional and non-traditional Italian fare.
Aribella, named after his youngest daughter Ariana, is Angelo’s vision of an Italian Tratorria. Offering fine Italian cuisine and world-class wines, Aribella provides a warm, friendly environment to savor a meal that is sure to please the pallet.
The dishes at Aribella are named after people and places in Angelo’s life that shaped his culinary experience, mostly from his childhood in Italy.
The Spaghetti Di Nonna Cristina is named after his grandmother with whom he spent hours in the kitchen helping as a boy. He still draws on her these days for inspiration.
Of course if he named a dish after his grandmother, Angelo would have to name one after his mother. The Gnocchi di Mamma Francesca is named for her and it is as fresh as she would have made it on their farm, raising 7 children. Angelo still visits his mother in Bridgeport, but now he does the cooking.
He has to pay tribute to his father as well, who still maintains a garden in the back of his home. Pasta di Nonno Giuseppe is made from fresh tomatoes and peas, and is a dish he has enjoyed cooking for years.
The Emmys personal pizza is named after the first restaurant he owned and operated at the Hi-Ho Center in Bridgeport.
Pappardelle Amantea is a popular dish. Almost as popular as the coastal town, Amantea, in Calabria that it is named after. Pappardelle is wide egg noodle pasta that is very delicate.
